Newton Free Food Garden Planting Party

The Newton Free Food Garden planting party takes place Saturday, May 2, 10:30am at the garden between the Newton Recreation Centre (13730 – 72nd Street) and The Grove.

We invite you to bring tools, seeds and some food to share for a potluck lunch. We also invite you to bring some buckets (like ice cream pails, etc) with the bottoms cut out. These will be used as dividers in the planter boxes.

If you would like to bring seedlings to plant, now is a good time to get those started!

As this project unfolds, decisions will be made by those who are present at meetings and work parties. If you would like to contribute to the development of this project, we encourage you to attend the planting party!

At this point, we have four planter boxes to work with. At the initial planning meeting, we decided that each planter box would have a “theme” that would guide what plants are planted in each. We will all collectively care for the plants in each of the boxes, and will all be welcome to harvest food from all of the boxes.

We brainstormed a starting list of possible “themes” for planter boxes:

  • Herbs
  • Pollinator plants
  • Perennials
  • Root Vegetables
  • Three Sisters
  • Potatoes
  • Lettuces
  • Edible Flowers
  • Zucchini/Squash
  • Native Plants

If anyone comes up with additional ideas for “themes” we will add them to the list and review them at the planting party.

We will choose the themes for each box based on who shows up and what seeds people bring on the day of the planting party.

We look forward to meeting you and working with you on this project!
