NaPoWriMo – Day 13

Each day for the month of April, the Cedar Bark Poets are writing a poem a day in celebration of NaPoWriMo, National Poetry Writing month. Poems are posted here daily. Let Katheren know if you would like to participate!

“And now for today’s (optional) prompt! The number 13 is often considered unlucky, so today I’d like to challenge you to beat the bad luck away with a poem inspired by fortune cookies. You could write a poem made up entirely of statements that predict the future (“You will meet a handsome stranger”), aphoristic statements (“The secret to getting ahead is getting started)” or just silly questions (“How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?”) Or you could use a phrase you’ve actually received in a real fortune cookie as a title or first line. However you proceed, I hope you will feel fortunate in the results (do you get it? Do you get it? Rimshot, please). Happy writing!”

Lucky Horse-Dinner for 3

‘You will make great gains
In any project you undertake’
Just remember the first step
Is most important to take.

‘You are one of the people who will
Go places’
I am not sure about this
Is that a rhino running Mulberry Street races!

‘Your kindness to others shall be returned
To you threefold’
Small givings to sisters and brothers
Makes the beauty in this life
Continue to unfold.

Folded Fortune

Creating paper fortune tellers
As if they predicted the future
Each time a flap was opened
A sweet message lay inside
Like “You’re so sweet”
Or “Friends are forever”
They really stated feelings
Or hoaxy future predictions

Fortune tellers were child’s play
Something to laugh and joke
With “You’re the best”
Or “I adore you”
All we could do
Was smile and giggle

For the young, fortunes are feelings
Imagination and creation at play
As adults fortunes can be a path
Perhaps shed some light
Truly you must believe in yourself
For how can a piece of paper be
“Holding your future bright”

– Rhiannon

A dream is a wish the heart makes

Stars can’t shine without darkness
A new challenge is near,
Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do your fears May your dreams stay big and your worries stay small If grass can grow through cement, love can find you at anytime in your life Accept defeat, it will only make you stronger You can be trusted to keep a secret If this love only exists in my dreams, don’t wake me up

Jade box restaurant, table thirteen

Red decor
green accents adorn
shadowy lighting

kitchen sounds spill out
behind a beaded curtain divider
I wait on a squeaky chair
trying not to move

manhandled chopsticks
my uneducated palate fulfilled
small flickering candle shadows table

with payment and gratuity comes bow
and a fortune cookie, on small plate set

cracked carefully in two
crumbs bounce, caught by edge of plate
a small white slip of paper

I read, enlighten, then fold it with the rest moving into the second half of the month

You will show unhappiness the door
There is a time to be happy and to no longer morn When you grow up, it is time to stop biting

You are your own worse source of doubt
Some times life throws you a curve ball, sometimes it’s a slider Courage can be found it you dare Sometimes to make music, you must follow the groove

The candy last longer if you only take small licks A straight path gets you there faster, than one milled You can do more than you think yourself able

Today is now
A stranger is a person you just haven’t met

Given a lotus flower, what can you do
Your actions contribute to your fate
All trouble is just vapour
