NaPoWriMo 2015 – Day 23

Today, our Cedar Bark Poets have been challenged to take a chance, literally. Find a deck of cards (regular playing cards, tarot cards, uno cards, cards from your “Cards Against Humanity” deck – whatever), shuffle it, and take a card – any card! Now, begin free-writing based on the card you’ve chosen. Keep going without stopping for five minutes. Then take what you’ve written and make a poem from it.

Angel Cards – Honour Your Healing Hands

These hands have helped
These hands have hurt
As Sea Cadet,fingers saluted curt
Cooked for many in cafes
Held together..stopped to pray
Pulled hard on tomorrow,to make my way
Spun dirty dishes endless wheel
Hands over heart to show how I’d feel
Buttoned up my daughters skirt’s
Ironed hundred times pants/shirts
Played with my dirty brown hair
I unconsciously smoothed to flirt
Had henna designs exotic flair
Gathered rocks to fling out far
Painted pictures..gonna be a star
Used them to set things right
Smoothed hair to calm night frights
Had some fights..formed a fist
Held a face before I kissed
Unfolded countless cartoon band aids
Baked many family meals I felt a maid
Swam cutting clean through summers water
Used them to pummel my own dead father
Wiped tears,my own and many
Dealt black jack & lost a few pennies
Held cups of coffee..til there wasn’t any
Crossed fingers when needed hope
Changed such diapers-thought I’d choke
Wrote a lifetimes stack of poetry
Penned correspondence between you and me
Dirtied and scratched them to pluck out weeds
Held packets carefully when I planted seeds
Petted cats and dogs-all breeds
They gave me good aim, playing Frisbee
Massaged the stress away for many
Do I give these 2 Thanks..never any
Full life for these empty hands
Age spots,and wrinkles band
What a good card to pull this way
I hold my hands up
In respect and honour today..!!

Submission #2

Solitaire Five of Hearts

They say it’s a five of hearts, but I see pictured just two
But this is the last card it dealt me through
It sits on the column most right
As I try to execute my solitaire might
But I sit here and look at that card in the passing fading light
As I travel, clacking of the cracking train wheels through the night
It’s dealt me a row that’s not so tight…
But that’s alright
For I still have two more deals with which to fight
But that last card in sight
The one not helping my plight
The five of hearts, but lacking the heartstrings to keep me from flight
I could do easily move it away into the night
And half way through if I change my mind, I just left go and it flies back where it was like a kite

Five of hearts, If I mess this move up I can undo, or even restart
never folded or dogeared or coming apart

High five to my five of hearts
for I have now a run in two parts
that need you to bring them together so I can elevate on the high scores charts
